I picked up this book the day my home was going to court to start foreclosure. My daughter recently passed away and I'm now making a home for her children. I was determined to thank God during this season of my life. Determined and doing it are two totally different things. I prayed for God to go before me and prepare my way and give me favor that morning. I happened to find Jay's book and downloaded to my kindle and started reading it at lunch. I laughed so hard I had to finally stop so my coworkers could do their jobs. But I also realized that my mind was totally taken off my trouble, I even forgot the time. I sure needed the laugh and the retreat. And I knew then we would be ok.He tells of quite a journey into learning to pray more earnestly and leaves you much to think on to enrich your prayer life. I love his humor in his story and the ways God puts things together on his journey that we could never imagine.This book was the answer to my prayers that morning and I give God all the praise for sending it to me at the perfect time. And thank you Jay for taking us along with you on your pilgrimage. Not all of us will get the opportunity to do this but you brought it to life for us! Overall, I enjoyed this book. It wasn’t pretentious, and I love that he and his wife put significant efforts into researching prayer from other people’s perspectives, mainly by means of travel and immersion. This book does read like more of a narration of travel, and is told very well, but the lack of depth to the subject at hand left me wanting. I can’t say there was anything that really jumped out as a significant revelation, but watching him become transformed was encouraging and enjoyable to see unfold.Jared told his truth, but I felt it was maybe quite a bit off from THE truth. I’m not expecting anyone ever to be 100% enlightened, but there were dozens of moments in this book that didn’t sit well with me.I picked up on some judgy undertones emerging as applied assumptions / spiritual exclusivity.He narrated a few events where he bent the rules to gain access, entered into places he was instructed not to go, and attempted to manipulate access bans with a nearing-aggressive reason as to why an exception should be made for him. This speaks to hints of entitlement and arrogance intended to be read as tireless efforts to overcome obstacles for the greater purpose.He used mathematical figures to qualify the efficacy of religious leaders, although I applaud him for rejecting prosperity theology which has been so damaging in our culture.But what bothered me the most were the stories where he knowingly inserted himself into places where there would be NO useful insights about living prayerfully. One place being Westboro Baptist Church (an event summarized with “just pray for them”), and the other, North Korea where he refused to bow to one of their leaders… An unnecessary action that he is very very very very lucky to have come out of alive… very unwise (especially given that N Korea does NOT miscommunicate their expectations from the get go) and woefully framed as religious zeal. I would like to say to anyone reading this that knowingly placing yourself in a situation of elevated odds of martyrdom does not make you a better Christian and your faith more approved. It may not have been Jared’s intended message, but it comes across that way very strongly. Jared must have anticipated he wouldn’t have gleaned anything having to do with prayer from Westboro and N Korea, so the inclusion of these stories felt superfluous at best, and self-exalting at worst.Overall, a cozy read with the vast majority of the book feeling pure and well-intended, and a writing style that kept me interested.
